Australia 24/25 21 December. Cricket

Today was all about the cricket as Peter was playing in a match.  After a cancelled first half of the usual 80 overs match last week due to the council putting sand on the pitch 2 weeks early,  this was a 40 overs each way match.

The ground had a brilliant backdrop of the city skyline and it ended up a close match with Newport Digman losing out with only 2 overs left to bowl.

A good game,  windy but sunny weather and great to see Peter in action,  which is the reason he's in Melbourne at all.

In the evening after the match we joined Peter's coach and family for an Italian meal in Williamstown. A fun evening with good food,  chat and laughs, but no photos.

Next stop was the ice cream and frozen yoghurt place nearby. We tried Acai with toppings. Nice but not sure it beats ice cream.

Australia 24/25 20 Dec Hobart to Melbourne

Our last morning in Hobart started early for Joanne who went to fitness by the beach with Jane for 6.15am, with the addition of a sea swim and breakfast of bacon and egg sandwiches as it was the last one before Christmas. Last chance for a coffee and chat with a wander along the beach to the coffee shop too. Joanne is reflecting that it's been so lovely to catch up and see Jane after a few years but yet feel like it was also so normal and everyday.

In the meantime Jon went for a walk up the hill to see the wallabies.

Carsten drove us to the airport,  where we found out our flight was delayed an hour.  We got to Melbourne, collected our cases and headed to the car hire place where we found out the 7 seater we'd ordered wasn't actually there yet,  so we had 2 matching Subarus until later that evening when the Santa Fe was dropped off for us.

Jon collected Peter and Amelia,  whilst Toby and Joanne did the Aldi so and we met up at the accommodation in serviced apartments in Williamstown, made dinner and enjoyed chilling with a game of cards against gravity.

Australia 24/25 19 Dec Bruny Island

This was a 2 family, 2 car trip to explore Bruny Island,  off the south of Tasmania.

After a half hour drive we arrived at the small car ferry port, grabbed a coffee on the cafe then had to dash to drive onto the ferry.  A 20 minute or so crossing on flat sea took us to Bruny, one Island that is almost like two,  just joined by a thin piece of land with sea either side,  called the neck.

We headed straight to the neck Lookout where we could clearly see the illusion of the ocean seeking lower on one side than the other.

After that photo stop we moved on to Adventure Bay, another lovely Tassie beach with hardly any people on it.  We ate a simple picnic lunch of bread and cheese,  then went for a walk/ swim on Adventure Bay.

Toby and Elizabeth enjoyed collecting "jellies", little pods like tiny jellyfish which were on the sand.

Next stop was the lighthouse at the south end of Bruny, with views out across the ocean and another stunning beach. To get there we took a short cut through a gravel track that was testing of the car suspension.

On the way back to the ferry we drove down to Simpsons Bay,  just because of the name. The Bay itself was not as nice as some of the others but we enjoyed seeing Wallabies at the side of the road.

After the ferry back to Tasmania and the drive to Hobart we ate lasagne and cooked marshmallows over the fire pit. This was our final night in Tasmania and we'd loved it all.

Australia 24/25 18 December Freycinet national park, Tasmania

Today we explored with a long drive to the Freycinet national park in Tasmania.

The Grimms were kind enough to lend us their car and we enjoyed the scenic drive from Hobart to Coles Bay, with so many beautiful,  deserted beaches we were tempted to so at them all,  but we had ac wander at Kelveden beach,  then on to Coles Bay, where we stopped for coffee and ice cream,  and then to the Wineglass Bay Lookout to see the beach voted No.1 in Australia. It was a perfect day for a walk,  20c and sunny,  but not too windy.

Toby was really excited to see a wallaby in the car park and he got some great photos,  including a selfie!

On the way back we spent some time at Honeymoon Bay with a canoe and hammock and beautiful sunshine.  There were even some people half their wedding photos there.

For a late lunch we ate with a spectacular view of Richardson's Bay from Freycinet Lodge,  with Matthew and I sampling a glass of wine from a local vineyard.

Finally,  a stop at the lighthouse before we headed back with a short stop at the bottle shop to select some wine from the most recommended vineyards.

The day was topped off by cheese and local wine when we got back to Hobart.
